This book is a great travel book with lots of historical notes and pictures along with suggested walking tours. It is written in a concise manner. After our trip it has helped immensely to identify some of the sites I took pictures of, but have now forgotten what the picture was of! This is the first DK Eyewitness Travel Guide I have purchased, but I would highly recommend it. The other great thing about the book is the large fold out and detachable laminated city map in the back, complete with a Metro map and information. It also contains a lot of museum information. All in all it is simply packed full of great information. The quality of the pages is absolutely wonderful, making it a "keeper" book. Lots and lots of photographs and illustrations and small area maps.

Wonderful guide, best I've ever used! We've traveled all over Europe, probably 25 cities in the past 5 years, and I've used many guides, but this was like having a private tour guide right there with you every step of the way. Usual information, plus intriguing "little known facts," plus arranged in several different ways so whichever way one enjoys touring -- walking tours with excellent detailed maps, best food, best shopping, really cannot say enough positive things about this book (only negative is price and size -- 440 pages is a little hefty, but well worth the weight).

We are still in planning stages but this is an excellent guide. It helps to provide reference and context and excellent in helping overcome the jitters of being in a land where English is not the primary language. The pictures help make everything come alive and the Maps are excellent in helping to plan a walking experience that doesn't double and triple cover the same ground. Highly recommend in planning your tip. Once taken, I will update on how it was when there.

The book was definitely helpful in our recent trip to Rome. The pullout map was a good idea so you can look at the map while reading the details in the book so that helped us plan our small city trips better. There are more details in the book than we needed to know for a pleasure trip but there were many "a-ha" moments along the way that helped us enjoy some of the sites more. The color coding also helped us to quickly find the locale we needed to go to

My wife and I used this guide in Rome. The maps, the "area by area" descriptions in particular were very helpful. The pictures and descriptions beside them were very informative. We tried to use the bus system according to the book and couldn't figure it out.
A simpler way to get around is to use the "hop on-hop off" transportation system and match their route to the maps in the book. It gets you to all the Areas in the book without having to master the bus system.
The pictures in the book are super.

I just returned from a week in Rome, the book was very helpful in planning our trip, and describing the places we wanted to see in detail. The pictures of various sites are accurate. The book defines Rome in logical geographic areas that make it easy to plan for efficient grouping of the sites, one wants to see, without having to travel back and forth across the city.

This was a Christmas gift for my daughter and husband who were spending two weeks on their own in Rome over the holidays. They admitted they only tossed it into their luggage at the last minute as they are seasoned travelers and never expected to need a street guide to Rome, which they had visited before. But they wrote to say they, in fact, used it daily and it became their "go to" source when they were looking for information on restaurants and things to see.

We just got back from Rome, and this guide was a big help. Over the years I've come to use the Eyewitness line of books because the illustrations have proven to be a great aid on walking tours. The tear out map is large and helpful for table planning, but I was also able to fold it for carrying in my pocket.

5.0 out of 5 stars Un buona guida
Reviewed in Italy on June 29, 2016

5.0 out of 5 stars Great guide - very rich

This guide is worth reading/skimming before you go, but we also found it great when out walking as it provided many historical facts and context we would not have had on our own.
Its full of details about schedules, fares, suggested walking tours.
Also there are many many things we would have walked past without even knowing they were there - and they were some of the highlights of our trip.

5.0 out of 5 stars Wieder unverzichtbar...

5.0 out of 5 stars Invaluable to our first trip to Rome
Reviewed in the United Kingdom on June 4, 2014
I bought this guide on the recommendation of previous amazon reviews to prepare for my first ever trip to Rome, both to do research before travelling and for use whilst there. A friend and I went for the full experience - the ancient, the renaissance, baroque, christian, modern, food, people watching, the lot. I ended up reading it cover to cover! It has everything you could possibly need, from a crash course in the history of the city to what to eat and drink, where to stay, area-by-area maps and guides, local customs, phrases, many great maps, practical advice and more. We used it every day and it led us to a number of great attractions and restaurants (and gelaterie...), not to mention stopping us from getting completely lost innumerable times (a miracle).
One thing it didn't tell us that would have been useful is that Terravision run a shuttle bus from Fiumincino to Termini, not just from Ciampino, which you can buy on their website for 4 euros each way per person. Much cheaper than a taxi!

Couldn't recommend this guide enough for those visiting the eternal city for the first time and every time thereafter! One warning - it is a breeze block. Not pocket size...

5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent information on Rome
Reviewed in France on January 22, 2013
It might be a little heavier than the usual guidebook but Rome has more than the usual city! This book has everything you need. Even the bus map was detailed enough to get around the city. The restaurants recommended were excellent; the summaries on the key sites, churches etc. were sufficient for the preliminary viewing. The visuals are excellent and everything is easy to find in the booklet. Money well spent indeed!
